Since its inception in 1939, Hyde Park Art Center has been serving as a gathering and production space for contemporary artists and the broader community to cultivate ideas, impact social change, and connect with new networks. Through a variety of exhibitions, residencies, classes, as well as professional development opportunities, the Art Center strives to provide the space for artists at every age and stage to cultivate their practice, experiment with making ambitious artwork, and build local and global connections.

The Hyde Park Art Center Archive contains materials pertaining to more than 30 selected exhibitions held at the Art Center between 1964 and 2017. The exhibitions included work by notable local artists including Gertrude Abercrombie, Ralph Arnold, Don Baum, Henry J. Darger, Jeanne Dunning, Edward C. Flood, Theaster Gates, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Sun Ra, Suellen Rocca, Tony Tasset, Bill Walker, and Karl Wirsum, as well as a recent exhibition imagining the contents of the Obama Presidential Library.

The Visual Resources Center and the Hyde Park Art Center are grateful for the generous Community Engagement funding in support of this project.
